With a black-market history and a finished product that was first made to be torn up and consumed, it's no surprise that reliable information on blotter art is scattered across many different sources, stories, and lysergic-fueled memories. Our goal is to keep this legacy alive for researchers, fans, and future generations.

Mark McCloud's: Institute of Illegal Images

The Blotter Art Archive owes its existence to the work of Mark McCloud and his Institute of Illegal Images, which remains the largest collection of vintage blotters in the world. Mark dedicated much of his life to collecting and archiving blotter art, displayed at his home/museum in San Francisco.

McCloud was twice prosecuted by federal authorities in the 1990s and early 2000s, accused of possessing LSD due to his blotter collection. These trials ultimately established blotter art as a legitimate art collectible rather than illegal contraband.
